PAKISTAN v AUSTRALIA 1979-80

Rain washed out the first day and delayed the start on the second by sixty-five minutes. The artificial methods used to restore the pitch produced a perfect batting strip on which new records were set as 999 runs were scored for the loss of just twelve wickets. For only the second time in Test history a whole side bowled; the other occasion was England v Australia at The Oval in 1884. Chappell, batting for seven hours and twenty-one minutes, scored his seventeenth Test century and shared in two record-breaking partnership for Australia v Pakistan. With Hughes he put on 179 for the third wicket, then stayed to add 217 for the fourth with Yallop, who batted nearly eight and a half hours for his 172, Taslim Arif and Javed Miandad also set a new third-wicket record of 223 unbroken for Pakistan v Australia. Taslim, in only his third Test, batted for seven and a quarter hours, with twenty 4s, to score his unbeaten 210, remaining on the field throughout the match. Australia's 617 was their highest score against Pakistan and the first total of over 600 in a Test match in Pakistan. Yet they made an unpromising start, losing their first wicket for 1 - when Laird was out for 0 - and their second for 21; but once Hughes and Chappell came together, the runs piled up. Pakistan made a spirited reply, scoring their 382 in 435 minutes, although the game was already committed to a draw.
