Wisden
Second One-day International

†PAKISTAN v ENGLAND 1987-88

At Karachi, November 20. England won by 23 runs. Toss: England. Gooch's 142 off 134 balls, with fourteen fours, was the second-highest score by an England player in a one-day international, the highest being D. I. Gower's 158 against New Zealand at Brisbane in 1982-83. Capel's 50, from 37 balls, included three successive sixes off Shoaib Mohammad. Defending an impressive total, England bowled and fielded poorly, allowing another weakened Pakistan side to get within 23 runs. Ramiz Raja completed a hat-trick of unusual dismissals against England in 1987. Incorrectly given run out when walking for a catch off a no-ball in Perth, and run out without facing at the Oval in the Texaco Trophy, he was here given out obstructing the field when looking for a second run off the final delivery to reach his hundred. It was the first such dismissal in a one-day international.

Man of the Match: G. A. Gooch.
