At Rajkot, January 5. West Indies won by six wickets. India were weakened by the absence through injury of the two players chiefly instrumental in their winning the previous match, Amarnath and Maninder Singh. West Indies, too, had their handicaps, illness keeping out Dujon, and Greenidge and Haynes incurring injuries in the field. However, Richards played one of his truly great innings to settle the issue, having already taken three wickets after India elected to bat. His 110, off only 77 balls, featured seven fours and seven sixes, three of which were hit off consecutive balls from Shastri. His last 60 came from only 28 balls. West Indies would have had fewer runs to chase had they not allowed as many as five lives to Raman, whose 95 off 123 balls included six fours. They were fined Rs 15,000 for failing to bowl the scheduled 46 overs.
