†AUSTRALIA v SRI LANKA 1987-88

At Sydney, January 19 (day/night). Australia won by three wickets. Toss: Sri Lanka. A face-saving innings of 79 from 100 balls by de Silva, just when Australia's bowlers seemed ready to inflict a crushing defeat, saw Sri Lanka reach 188. Both Whitney and Waugh recorded their best bowling figures in a one-day international. However, the Sri Lankan batsmen's struggle was put into better perspective as Australia made hard work of reaching their target and won with only three balls to spare. Veletta, in recording his best score in the competition, batted from the fall of the second wicket until the end, his stand of 73 with Dodemaide in three-quarters of an hour saving his team from embarrassment.

Man of the Match: M. R. J. Veletta. Attendance: 18,716.
