At Melbourne, January 14 (day/night). Australia won by 38 runs. Toss: Australia. Australia's all-round superiority showed through as Sri Lanka were comfortably beaten by them for the third time in the tournament. Veletta (46 from 68 balls) and Border (61 from 60) gave the innings the impetus it needed, and Taylor, following an unbeaten 27 with four for 38, showed his value in this type of cricket. Ranatunga (67 from 86 balls) and Madugalle added 97 for the fifth wicket, but after the latter's dismissal the Sri Lankan innings fell apart.
