Jones and Waugh added 88 for the fifth wicket from 113 balls with intense concentration needed and unofficial drinks supplied every other over. Dodemaide was the pick of the Australian bowlers, and his dismissal of Martin Crowe when the score was 168 removed the will of the New Zealand lower order.
