†AUSTRALIA v NEW ZEALAND 1987-88

At Melbourne, January 7 (day/night). Australia won by 6 runs. Toss: Australia. A match-saving 68 by Waugh in heat which exceeded 40ºC saw Australia reach a respectable total after an early collapse in which Gillespie claimed the wickets of Marsh and Border with his first two balls. Jones and Waugh added 88 for the fifth wicket from 113 balls with intense concentration needed and unofficial drinks supplied every other over. Dodemaide was the pick of the Australian bowlers, and his dismissal of Martin Crowe when the score was 168 removed the will of the New Zealand lower order.

Man of the Match: S. R. Waugh. Attendance: 61,316.
