At Perth, January 2. Australia won by 81 runs. Put in to bat on a near perfect pitch, Australia got away to a flying start with Boon dominating. De Alwis (41 balls) and Labrooy enlivened the later stages with 50 for the ninth wicket in 29 minutes before Dodemaide picked up the last two wickets to become the second player after U. S. H. Karnain (Sri Lanka v New Zealand, 1983-84) to take five wickets in his first one-day international.
