NEW ZEALAND v PAKISTAN 1988-89

At Christchurch, March 4. New Zealand won by seven wickets. Toss: New Zealand. It was a convincing performance by the home team, although the fates were pointing in their favour from the start. Miandad was injured in the pre-match practice, Imran lost the toss, and Pakistan were sent in on a pitch which, in cloudy and dark conditions, suited seam bowlers. The match was reduced from 50 to 47 overs each because of rain. Morrison, repeating his performance for Auckland early in the tour, wrecked the Pakistan innings. Imran and Ramiz steadied it with a fifth-wicket partnership of 78, and Ijaz scored 42 from 30 balls, including 20 from Morrison's eighth over. It was, however, too little, too late. New Zealand lost their first two wickets for 12, but Jones, driving delightfully through the covers, a subdued Crowe and Greatbatch (33 balls) ensured the match was won with 6.1 overs to spare. Jones, playing in his 25th one-day international, passed 1,000 runs.
