India also struggled, but recovered after the loss of their fifth wicket at 76. Pataudi and Borde added 142 for the sixth wicket and early on the third day Pataudi completed a splendid century. McKenzie claimed six wickets for 58 in 32 overs.

Australia cleared arrears of 65 during an opening stand of 91 between Simpson and Lawry. Burge and Veivers also batted well. Set to get 333 to win, India lost four wickets for 24 on the fourth evening and despite a fifth-wicket partnership of 93 between Hanumant Singh and Manjrekar, they never possessed a real chance.
