At Calcutta, January 29, 30, February 1, 2, 3. Drawn. England had l2 fit men on this occasion, Cowdrey and Parfitt having joined the team, and Jones was made twelfth man.

There was more encouragement than usual for fast bowlers on the first day, and a splendid performance by Price, five wickets for 44 in 15 overs reduced India to 169 for eight just before tea.

Thanks to Nadkarni, the last two wickets added 72, and slow English batting afterwards doomed yet another match to be left drawn. Cowdrey batted six hours and twenty minutes for 107 and, with two and a half hours being lost by an amazing decision of the umpires that the ground was unfit, when only one millimetre of rain fell on the third day, the English innings did not finish with a lead of 26 until the fourth day.

Jaisimha then played brilliantly to reach 49 in 12 overs, but he spent another 12 overs finding his fiftieth and altogether batted five hours for 129. The final day's play was accordingly pointless, though it contained some attractive batting by Smith.
