WEST INDIES v PAKISTAN 1957-58

At Port of Spain, February 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11. West Indies won by 120 runs. By bringing back Dewdney (fast) and introducing Madray (leg-breaks) and Gibbs (off-breaks), West Indies gave themselves the advantage of more bowlers of greater variety and deservedly won a hard-fought game soon after lunch on the sixth day. Sobers, Weekes and Kanhai laid the foundation for a satisfactory score when West Indies, without Walcott (injured back), batted first. Then Gilchrist's pace and the accurate off-breaks of Smith made inroads into the Pakistan batting. Mathias, batting soundly, led a recovery and that splendid all-rounder, Fazal Mahmood, gave him fine support as well as joining in a determined last-wicket stand with Mahmood Hussain. West Indies, however, quickly built upon their lead of 43, Sobers and Smith making strokes attractively. Nasimul Ghani bowled his left-arm slows steadily in both West Indies innings. Set to make 356, Pakistan seemed to be in a good position after a second-wicket stand of 130 between Hanif Mohammad and Saeed Ahmed, but Gilchrist and Dewdney, with the new ball, took three wickets with the score at 180. Sobers accounted for Hanif with a superb catch in the gully and Pakistan never recovered.
