First Test Match

PAKISTAN v INDIA 1982-83

At Lahore, December 10, 11, 12, 14, 15. Drawn. The match, though rain-affected, was a statistician's delight. Pakistan thrashed the Indian attack to the tune of 485 after Gavaskar had put them in. Zaheer's 215 was his 100th first-class century - he became the twentieth batsman to have achieved this great feat - and his ninth for Pakistan. He batted for five and a half hours, hitting two 6s and 23 4s. Mohsin became the first Pakistani to complete 1,000 Test runs in a calendar year, his century being his fourth in Test matches, three of them at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore in 1982. Sarfraz took four for 63 in India's innings, having changed his mind about retiring. For India, Amarnath made his third Test century, reached in 383 minutes, and Gavaskar passed 7,000 runs in Tests, a feat achieved only by Boycott, Cowdrey, Hammond and Sobers. A draw became virtually inevitable after rain and bad light had accounted for a total of 235 minutes on the first and third days.
