Pakistan v New Zealand

Toss: Pakistan. Test debuts: Pakistan - Javed Miandad; New Zealand - R.W.Anderson, W.K.Lees, P.J.Petherick.

This was the first Test out of eight played at the Quaddafi Stadium to produce a decisive result.

The match was remarkable for the success attending newcomers to Test cricket. At 19 years and 119 days, Javed Miandad became the youngest-ever player to score a century on his début.

For New Zealand, the off-spinner Petherick, beginning his Test career at 34, performed the hat-trick. The feat of scoring a century on début narrowly eluded Anderson, New Zealand's strongly-built batsman.

The big margin of Pakistan's win belied their early problems. Hadlee bowled with great hostility on the first day and Pakistan were 55 for four.

Asif Iqbal tried to storm the New Zealand bowling and did not look too secure, but he quietened down when he saw Javed command so much authority and fluency from the very start of his memorable innings. Now Asif also looked set for a big score.

Javed reached his century in two hours, fifty minutes and he had hit twenty-one 4's in his 163 when he mistimed a pull, probably through tiredness. He and Asif added 281 for the fifth wicket.

Javed was the first victim in Petherick's hat-trick. Wasim Raja feebly drove a return catch off the next ball and then Intikhab was snapped up at silly point.

New Zealand had to contend with another sizeable partnership, between Asif Iqbal and Imran Khan, before they wrapped up the Pakistan innings. New Zealand did not help themselves by dropping each of them early on the second morning.

By the end of the day, New Zealand's fate looked sealed. They were bowled out in just over four hours for 157 runs, of which Howarth made 39. All that could be said in mitigation of the New Zealanders' collapse was that they had not has sufficient cricket on the tour before the first Test. As in their two previous games, the top half of their batting surrendered to pace and the lower half, in a state of near panic, were overrun by leg spin

The match looked like finishing in three days when New Zealand, following on 260 behind, were 62 for four. But Burgess, fully using his talent and experience, and Anderson halted the collapse. They put on 183 runs with forthright batting till Mustaq induced a snick by Anderson, only eight short of his century. Burgess went on to make 111 and New Zealand finished the day a 299 for six. Lees, New Zealand's new wicketkeeper, Hadlee and O'Sullivan all offered resistance before the innings subsided.

Pakistan needed only 101 to win. Majid Khan and Sadiq Mohammed got the first 49 of these fairly effortlessly, but there was some excitement as four wickets went down before Pakistan reached their objective. Zaheer Abbas and Mustaq Mohammed were both out to balls from Petherick that bit and turned, which went to show that New Zealand would have contested the finish more keenly had they batted better in the first innings.
