At Melbourne, January 1, 2, 3, 5, 6. Australia won by 348 runs. Australia made Walker, their twelfth man in Adelaide, the replacement for the injured Thomson, while Pakistan brought back Sadiq Mohammad for Mudassar Nazar and were compelled to replace Sarfraz Nawaz, who had strained his left thigh.

Asif Masood was chosen, but failed to take a wicket in 13 harmless overs on what seemed a placid pitch until Lillee applied his strength and great will-to-win to the task.

Australia won the toss and batted after half an hour's delay because of rain. Pakistan squandered the new ball and Davis and Turner registered a first wicket partnership of 134, a stand broken unexpectedly by the gentle medium-paced Asif Iqbal, who took three wickets for only two runs.

Chappell effortlessly went on to make his thirteenth century in 42 Tests and shared a record fifth wicket stand of 171 with Cosier, who had hit a century in his first Test on the ground the previous summer against the West Indies. He finished with 168 in well under four hours with twenty boundaries. The spinner Iqbal Qasim was again Pakistan's best bowler with four for 111.

Majid Khan and Sadiq emulated the feat of the Australian openers with a century stand, Sadiq reaching his fifth century in 23 Tests, after early hostility from Lillee, some of which was directed at umpire Brooks for warning him about an excess of bouncers and then for bowling his over too slowly.

By lunch on the third day, Pakistan were 266 for two. O'Keeffe having dismissed Sadiq after an innings of five hours. Then Lillee took the new ball and his additional pace and aggression until the end of the innings just before tea gained him another five wickets for 30 runs in seven overs. The last eight wickets fell for 63 runs.

Davis and McCosker built on Lillee's grand efforts with a stand of 176 after the early loss of Turner; McCosker reached his third Test century and passed his 1,000 Test runs. Chappell lashed out effectively before declaring and giving Pakistan an objective of 500 runs for victory.

Lillee and O'Keeffe troubled Pakistan throughout the remainder of the fourth day after Gilmour had snared Sadiq. Zaheer continued his excellent series with 58 before Walker had him leg before wicket and in the last hour Lillee sent back Mushtaq, Majid and Asif Iqbal, allowing Australia to complete the victory early on the fifth day.
