Canada v U.S.A.

Ontario, September 3, 4, 5, 1977. Canada won the 58th match in the series by an innings and 187 runs, their biggest winning margin in the series. The victory by the Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1892 of an innings and 222 runs is the largest recorded win by either side in the 133 years of competition. Canada put the U.S.A. in to bat on a good wicket of matting on grass, in fine weather. The fast bowlers Callender and Stevens ripped through the U.S.A. innings, dismissing them for 68 runs. Callender took three for 33 and Stevens seven for 29. Canada replied with 251 for five by the close, thanks to a fine innings of 95 by Bacchus and 33 by Dennis. Bacchus made his 95, including six 4's, in two hours and twenty-five minutes. The next morning Brown for the U.S.A. removed Stevens and Patel in the first half-hour. Bhamji joined Mauricette and together they added 79 runs before the declaration. Mauricette, 102 not out, hit two 6's and seven 4's in two hours and forty minutes. It was the first century by a Canadian in the series since 1963. The U.S.A., 292 behind, put up a dogged resistance to score 105. Durity stayed just under three hours for 39, but when he was caught off Patel at 84 resistance crumbled and the last five wickets fell for 21 runs in 27 minutes. Patel took five for 32 and Sealey four for 18 for Canada who regained the K. Auty Trophy.
