FIRST-CLASS COUNTY YEARBOOKS, 1999

The most remarkable cricket publication of the year was perhaps the Hampshire County Cricket Club Handbook - for 1954. It was finally produced, in the style of the time, 45 years late by the 1999 editor, Andrew Renshaw. The handbook originally failed to come out due to financial problems, leaving collectors with an irritating gap. It is available for £6 post free from Hampshire CCC, County Ground, Northlands Road, Southampton SO15 2UE.

All the counties managed to get their 1999 volumes out on a conventional timescale. The standard remains varied. Yorkshire's hardback still stands alone for enduring quality; Lancashire's 384-page effort, which includes League cricket as well, is now the best value; Essex and Kent also top 300 pages. Hampshire get high marks for clarity, in contrast to Somerset, where a typographer has run riot. Derbyshire's statistical section is particularly solid. Some of the biggest counties seem to produce the skimpiest efforts, and the Warwickshire yearbook is not much more than an annual report. - M.E.

Derbyshire £5, Durham £6, Essex £7, Glamorgan £6, Gloucestershire £5, Hampshire £7.50, Kent £4.99, Lancashire £7, Leicestershire £7, Middlesex £8, Northamptonshire £9, Nottinghamshire £4.50, Somerset £7, Surrey £5, Sussex £6, Warwickshire £5, Worcestershire £6, Yorkshire £13. 2000 prices may change. Some counties may add charges for p&p.

PERIODICALS

The major development in a tough UK market has been the establishment of The New Ball, a twice-a-year publication in book format, along the life of Granta. It is not the first gallant attempt to start something new in recent years, but it is the first to win widespread praise for its literary quality - and to show some signs of sticking around. Tim de Lisle, edit of Wisden Cricket Monthly, this Almanack's sister publication, was named Editor of the Year (Special Interest Magazines) by the British Society of Magazine Editors. The judges praised WCM for Quality journalism, stylish presentation and pure passion. - M.E.
