England v India

At Sharjah, April 11 (day/night). India won by nine runs. Toss: India.

England's seventh consecutive defeat in one-day internationals ended their interest in this tournament, a sad comedown after their triumph in Sharjah 16 months earlier. Jadeja's happy form continued, this time with the bat: he hit an unbeaten 74 from 67 balls.

A target of 240 was just too much for England, who lost four wickets by the 17th over. They were not helped by a bizarre batting shake-up which relegated Fairbrother to No. 8. But first Knight, then Thorpe, suggested a recovery. Even after Prasad bowled two men in successive overs, Gough saw that the last two wickets put on 42, before the innings ended with a third chaotic run-out.

Man of the Match: B. K. V. Prasad.
