Again, England failed to land the big punch, and stumbled in sight of an upset win. A spectacular collapse sentenced them to their fifth defeat in six games and gave Australia their sixth victory on the trot. England were 198 for four in the 43rd over, needing only 35 from 47 balls, when Hussain took a huge bite at Warne, who had been baiting him, charged down the pitch and was stumped. (This almost cost him a place in the World Cup: he was omitted from the original squad after much criticism of this one shot and only included when Atherton was injured.) Hollioake was lbw next ball, and the pile-up soon came to five wickets for six. Last pair Croft and Mullally added 18 and started the last over needing 12. But McGrath, whose first five overs had cost 33, knocked out Mullally's middle stump. Earlier, Australia were a disappointing 115 for four, three dismissed by Wells, before Bevan hit an unbeaten 69 in 74 balls. He dislocated his finger in the field and missed the last game.
