Carlton & United Series 1998-99, thirteenth match

England v Sri Lanka

At Sydney, February 3 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by 11 runs. Toss: England.

Already qualified, England played a second-string team dropped their guard and were given a sharp dressing-down by Stewart, who was resting. Rain reduced the game to 44 overs a side, and Adam Hollioake put Sri Lanka in on a slowish pitch which tested the patience of all but the spinners. England picked only one, however; it was left to medium-pacer Alleyne to take three for 27. A run-a-ball 52 by De Silva, who hit the last ball of the innings for six, proved a match-winner. Even without Muralitharan, nursing a groin strain, Sri Lanka had five slow bowlers and wore down England on a deteriorating pitch. Samaraweera struck first, with two wickets in three balls; he and Chandana finished with three each.

Man of the Match: T. T. Samaraweera. Attendance: 9,855.
