Carlton & United Series 1998-99, tenth match

Australia v England

At Adelaide, January 26 (day/night). Australia won by 16 runs. Toss: Australia.

A Hick century, a late collapse and a narrow defeat... a familiar tale for England. A capacity Australia Day crowd saw Hick score a beautifully paced hundred, his third in four innings. But England skidded from 162 for two, losing their last eight in 14 overs. Hick was ninth out, having had real support only from Knight.

Australia's 239 for eight had looked vulnerable on a sound pitch, although Waugh's stellar form produced his sixth successive half-century. But England seemed distracted after their dust-up with Sri Lanka earlier in the week. Warne captained Australia well, using eight bowlers and taking three for 39, probably his best bowling of the summer: walking to the press conference, he whispered to a friend: "chalk up one for the fat leg-spinner."

Man of the Match: G. A. Hick. Attendance: 29,557.
