Carlton & United Series 1998-99, ninth match

Australia v Sri Lanka

At Adelaide, January 24 (day/night). Australia won by 80 runs. Toss: Sri Lanka.

McGrath harvested five for 40, his best return at this level. His game plan, challenging conventional one-day policy, was to rattle the Sri Lankans' ribs with short-pitched bowling. It reaped spectacular rewards as they folded in 41.4 overs. McGrath extracted a series of tentative edges behind and to slip; he looked particularly revved up when bowling to Ranatunga, after Warne jogged up with the concise instruction give it to him: McGrath did, second ball. Playing their fourth game in six days, the Sri Lankans looked drained by the previous night's excitement. Waugh, with 57 from 68 balls, again proved the bedrock of Australia's innings. Vaas hit back with three late wickets to put a brake on the closing stages.

Man of the Match: G. D. McGrath. Attendance: 26,193.
