Carlton & United Series 1998-99, sixth match

England v Sri Lanka

At Melbourne, January 19 (day/night). England won by seven wickets. Toss: Sri Lanka.

Gough's summer-long form spree bankrolled England's fourth win in five games. His opening spell left Sri Lanka teetering on 21 for four in the 11th over, their fate all but settled. Against less challenging bowling, Ranatunga scored a cultured 76 and Chandana his maiden fifty for Sri Lanka. But England romped to 189 without being tested. Openers Stewart and Knight set up their charge in a stand of 52. Though Zoysa had them caught off successive deliveries (in different overs), Hick continued his match-winning form from Sydney two days earlier. This was Sri Lanka's eighth consecutive one-day defeat.

Man of the Match: D. Gough. Attendance: 14,979.
