Carlton & United Series 1998-99, fourth match

Australia v England

At Melbourne, January 15 (day/night). Australia won by nine wickets. Toss: England.

Australian captain Warne probably saved the game when he came on to the field at Stewart's request to calm drunken spectators who had tossed golf and billiard balls at English outfielders. He playfully put on Waugh's helmet before approaching the trouble-makers. Play resumed after a five-minute halt.

Warne controlled the match equally effectively, and Waugh and Ponting coasted to victory in the 40th over. Each hit eight fours, with three of Ponting's coming off a single over from Headley. England's winning streak ended through both poor batting and fielding: Waugh was put down at slip first ball. McGrath took his 100th wicket in his 77th one-day international.

Man of the Match: M. E. Waugh. Attendance: 82,299.
