Coca-Cola Champions Trophy 1998-99, first match

India v Sri Lanka

At Sharjah, November 6 (day/night). India won by three wickets. Toss: India. International debut: T. T. Samaraweera.

In his 302nd match, Azharuddin became the leading run-scorer in one-day internationals, passing Desmond Haynes's record of 8,648 in 238. But he fell just after the landmark, six short of a century. It took Agarkar - smashing 26 off 12 balls - to clinch the win with five balls to spare. Jayasuriya and his latest opening partner, Gunawardene, started the game with an aggressive stand of 79 in 14 overs. A fifty from Atapattu gave Sri Lanka a fighting chance, and their hopes briefly rose when Tendulkar and Ganguly fell cheaply.

Man of the Match: M. Azharuddin.
