First One-Day International

South Africa v West Indies 1998-99

At Johannesburg, January 22 (day/night). South Africa won by two wickets (D/L method). Toss: South Africa. International debut: K. F. Semple.

Needing 24 off the final two overs, and 12 off the last, South Africa scrambled the winning single off the last ball, bowled at 11.59 p.m. Had that run not been taken, West Indies would have won by 0.6 of a run under Duckworth/Lewis rules. Rain first reduced the game to a 46-over affair, and then to 28 overs, but South Africa were penalised one for their slow over-rate. Hooper scored at more than a run a ball, though he was eclipsed by Klusener, whose decisive 27 came off 14 balls.

Man of the Match: C. L. Hooper. Attendance: 25,230.
