Sri Lanka v India 1997-1998

At R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, July 7 (day/night). India won by six runs. Toss: India.

Tendulkar and Ganguly gave India an enormous advantage in this match when they ran up 252 in 43 overs for the first wicket, a world record in limited-overs internationals. Ganguly scored 109 from 136 balls, with two sixes and six fours; Tendulkar's share was 128 from 131 balls, and he hit two sixes and eight fours. It was Tendulkar's 17th century at this level, equalling Desmond Haynes's record; he also became the second Indian to pass 7,000 one-day international runs, in his 196th match. India left Sri Lanka an imposing target of 308. But De Silva was not to be outdone. Fighting against a groins strain (he needed a runner), he made 105, from 94 balls. Sri Lanka fell only seven runs short of victory in the final over; Agarkar again proved himself with four wickets.

Man of the Match: S. R. Tendulkar. Man of the Series: P. A. De Silva.
