New Zealand v South Africa

At Hobart, December 11. South Africa won by one run. Toss: South Africa.

A slow, low pitch spread a wet blanket over this game, the only one of the tournament to be played entirely in daylight. Dashers were unable to hit their stride in a dreadfully dull contest - until Harris and Vettori set up the tightest of finishes. Watching New Zealand score 100 in 35 overs was like watching a dentist pull teeth, and they seemed to be right out of it at 111 for seven. But Harris and Vettori whittled the target down to 35 off five overs, 16 off two and six off the final ball - which Harris edged for four. South Africa's unsung hero was keeper Richardson, who moved smartly to stop two edges sneaking by in the last three overs. Had either passed him, they would probably have lost. Klusener's burst of form continued, claiming New Zealand's top three plus 37 runs.

Man of the Match: L. Klusener. Attendance: 4,018.
