Pepsi Independence Cup, first final match

PAKISTAN v SRI LANKA

At Mohali, May 24 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by 115 runs. Toss: Sri Lanka.

Pakistan's weak and inexperienced bowling was put to the sword as Sri Lanka ran riot, to reach the seventh-highest total in one-day internationals. Jayasuriya scored an entertaining 96, off 67 balls, missing his century when he just failed to clear long-off. He had put on 148 with Atapattu, a Sri Lankan first-wicket record. There was to be no respite as Aravinda de Silva and Ranatunga added 153 for the third wicket. All the top four passed 50 and three of them reached 80, showing just the right mix of aggression and safe batting, with singles seemingly there for the asking. Pakistan had no realistic hopes of making 340 once Sajeewa de Silva sent their top three back to the pavilion before 50 was on the board. Moin Khan slashed his way to 57 off 60 balls at No. 7, but it was too little, too late, and with two men injured and unable to bat, they folded by the 44th over.

Man of the Match: S. T. Jayasuriya.
