SRI LANKA v WEST INDIES

At Sharjah, October 11. Sri Lanka won by six runs. Toss: West Indies. International debut: H. A. G. Anthony.

Opener Mahanama batted into the final over, though cramp meant that he needed a runner to complete his century. He also owed much to the inspiration of Ranatunga, who scored 58 in 54 balls and raised the tempo as they added 126 in 20 overs. Richardson had chosen to bowl, hoping to find something in the pitch early on. But he had only one class bowler, Bishop, and the most successful West Indian was a fielder, Simmons, with four catches. West Indies were still on course at 165 for two, needing another 70 from 11 overs. However, Campbell was caught on the mid-wicket boundary and then six fell for 34 runs.

Man of the Match: R. S. Mahanama.
