On the slowest imaginable pitch, New Zealand started at breakneck speed: they were 90 for three after only 13.2 overs. Rather than curb their scoring-rate and save wickets, they charged on - to apparent disaster, all out for 158 with 14 overs unused. Simmons was later fined for intimidatory appealing. West Indies needed only 3.2 an over, but again slow-medium New Zealand bowling, backed by inspired fielding, steadily cut through the batting. Even so, Holder looked capable of steering them through. But with only five runs needed and one over left, Cairns bowled Walsh to complete an astonishing four-run victory. Adjudicator Basil Butcher pronounced it a team performance and declined to pick out any individual.
