NEW ZEALAND v PAKISTAN

At Auckland, December 23. New Zealand won by 32 runs. Toss: Pakistan.

New Zealand bounced back to level the series by bowling out Pakistan with 20 balls in hand. Rain had delayed the start and reduced the game to 45 overs a side, but New Zealand made 244, their biggest total of the series, helped by some poor fielding. Waqar Younis conceded 70 in his nine overs and there were 20 extras. Most of the top order contributed, and Astle scored 20 in 14 balls, including three fours in Waqar's final over. He was later responsible for three wickets, plus a catch and two run-outs. Pakistan were a forlorn 146 for seven by the 32nd over, but Salim Malik hit an impressive 58, with three sixes, and took them to 188 with Mushtaq Ahmed's help. Once he fell, Pakistan had no chance.

Man of the Match: N. J. Astle.
