INDIA v WEST INDIES

At Madras, October 23. India won by four wickets. Toss: India. International debut: S. L. Campbell.

West Indies seemed to be in absolute command while Lara and Hooper were adding 112 for the third wicket. But Lara was given out leg-before to Tendulkar, aiming an extravagant pull at a ball beyond off stump, and Adams and Hooper followed two runs later. An eventual total of 221 was inadequate. Still, the West Indian new-ball bowlers struck early to dismiss Sidhu and Tendulkar, who had made nought, nought and eight in successive matches. Azharuddin took charge with a fine 81, off 84 balls, to keep India ahead of the asking-rate. When he was out, 27 short of victory, Mongia guided them home.

Man of the Match: M. Azharuddin.
