A crowd widely estimated as close to 100,000 watched with delight as West Indies' batting collapsed. From 57 for one they lost nine wickets for 66, and were all out with nearly ten overs remaining; Kumble took the last six for four runs in 26 balls. His full figures of six for 12 were the best for India in one-day internationals. One of his victims, Holder, notched up the dubious first of being given out bowled by a TV umpire. In theory, Sekhar Chowdhury's judgments were limited to line decisions, but umpires Robinson and Liebenberg called for advice because they were uncertain whether the ball had been deflected off the wicket-keeper.

This was not West Indies' only misfortune: during India's innings, cordite from a firecracker entered Arthurton's eye, forcing him to leave the field. But Richardson had chosen to bat second on a wearing pitch, already used in both semi-finals. India began well enough, with Kambli and Azharuddin adding 80 in 14 overs, before three wickets fell at 161 - including Kambli, run out when Ambrose kicked the ball on to his wicket. They scored only eight between the 37th and 43rd overs. But when West Indies went so cheaply it hardly mattered.
