Wintry Jalandhar witnessed a most exciting finish. But few realised that Sri Lanka's gallant chase had ended in victory when they took 15 off the last over. After a third interruption for rain, the umpires had not informed the scorers or the public of the last adjustment in the target. The 30,000 spectators still assumed Sri Lanka needed 145 in 34 overs, rather than 141 in 33.

Bowling the 33rd over, Srinath was spanked for nine off the first three balls. Striving for more pace, he gave away two wides, then De Silva struck his penultimate ball over point for four. De Silva's 32 at the death swung the game after his team had been 99 for six, and was consolation for Sri Lanka on an otherwise disastrous tour. The Indian innings was marked by a fifty from Tendulkar, who marshalled the second half of the batting after Sidhu made a quick 46 on his home ground.
