A scrambled single off bat and pad from the last ball of the match gave England victory in front of a capacity crowd at the Sawai Man Singh stadium. Thousands were locked out, many in possession of forged tickets and some with valid ones, and lathi-wielding police employed riot control tactics to dissuade them from climbing the walls.

This furious activity, sending up huge dust clouds, was matched by the excited cacophony inside the stadium. Jarvis was much the best of England's bowlers. The yorker which splayed Sidhu's stumps in the second over caused widespread relief, particularly for Emburey, and his fast-medium in-swing might well have caused a collapse, had Hick accepted a simple catch at slip to dismiss Kambli. In the event Kambli celebrated his 21st birthday with an unbeaten hundred. His 164-run partnership with his schoolfriend Tendulkar took India to a sizeable total.

Stewart's 91 was the backbone of England's reply, and he used his feet well to hit left-arm spinner Raju over the ropes twice. Later, Fairbrother supplied the necessary acceleration. England needed six from the last over, and Prabhakar was left to rue an overthrow off his own penultimate delivery, which enabled them to draw level.
