At Kingston, Jamaica, February 26. Australia won by 35 runs. Toss: Australia. West Indies lost their last six wickets for 19 runs after Richardson and Logie, each scoring at a run a ball, had given them renewed hope with a partnership of 95. Logie was caught at square leg, having hit seven fours, Marshall was run out at the non-striker's end from a bowler's deflection, and McDermott then struck the decisive blows by dismissing Richardson (one six, five fours), Dujon and Gray.

Australia's total was almost entirely due to the improvised strokes, expert placement and alert running between the wickets of Jones and Mark Waugh, who added 136 in 23 overs for the fourth wicket against some indisciplined bowling and fielding. Jones's unbeaten 88 was made from 105 balls, with six fours, and Waugh hit seven fours in his run-a-ball 67. It was West Indies' first home defeat in eighteen one-day internationals since they lost to England off the last ball at Port-of-Spain in March 1986.
