At Sydney, February 25. Australia won by 69 runs. Toss: Australia. The Australian selectors omitted Stephen Waugh for the first time in 87 one-day internationals, bringing in his twin, Mark. Moody (63 balls) and Mark Taylor put on 84 in twenty overs for the first wicket, and after Taylor (120 balls) and Jones (53 balls) had added 95 in eighteen overs, the later batsmen gathered runs freely, helped by some appalling fielding. Pakistan's gamble in promoting Wasim Akram up the order was thwarted when, after he had scored 36 from 29 deliveries, Peter Taylor deceived him through the air and Healy made an excellent stumping. Salim Yousuf hit out in the dying stages, scoring 59 from 75 balls, but the loss of Imran for a single had signalled the end for Pakistan much earlier.
