PAKISTAN v SRI LANKA

At Adelaide, February 17. Pakistan won by 27 runs. Toss: Sri Lanka. A WSC record aggregate of 603 runs, with only eleven wickets falling, was the product of a near-perfect Adelaide pitch and a match which, for a long time, was evenly poised. The Pakistan openers, Ramiz and Anwar, were not parted until the 33rd over, by which time they had put on 202 in just 132 minutes and beaten the previous best opening stand (182) in WSC matches. They were just 10 short of the world best for the first wicket in one-day internationals. Anwar, normally a middle-order batsman, hit six sixes and eight fours in his 126 (99 balls), while Ramiz again batted throughout the innings. His unbeaten 107 came from 158 balls and contained three boundaries. Sri Lanka lost wickets at regular intervals before Ranatunga and Mahanama, in a fifth-wicket stand, added 128 in 78 minutes from 120 balls. However, tight bowling by Waqar Younis prevented Sri Lanka's final assault from getting too close to Pakistan's total.

Man of the Match: Saeed Anwar.

Attendance: 3,854.
