At Madras, October 21. Australia won by 99 runs. Toss: Australia. From the moment Border won the toss and chose to bat, this was very much his match. He had a role in all departments. Marsh anchored the Australian innings until the 42nd over, by which time Border had helped him put on 112 and Waugh had set out his stall with a mighty six off Ambrose. Waugh's unbeaten 53 from 44 balls (two sixes, four fours) provided a thrilling counter to a tight performance by the West Indians in the field. Their batsmen, however, could not match it. Best failed to score, Haynes was run out by Waugh's throw from deep cover, Logie played on, and Richards swung and missed. Only Richardson, until Border tied him down which accurate slow left-arm bowling, played with any fluency, though the Australians were convinced Border had caught him at slip when he was 3. When Border caught and bowled him for 61 off 101 balls, West Indies tumbled to a heavy defeat with almost ten overs unused.
