†AUSTRALIA v WEST INDIES 1988-89

At Melbourne, January 5 (day/night). Australia won by 8 runs. Toss: West Indies. This was Australia's first victory in fourteen one-day internationals against West Indies on the Melbourne ground, and they achieved it in spite of dropping Richards four times in his innings of 48. Put in to bat, Australia were spared the early attentions of Marshall, whose form at the time did not entitle him to an automatic place in the West Indian side. In the event West Indies missed his experience as, either side of a half-hour stoppage for rain, Australia passed 200 with six overs left and seven wickets standing. They were disappointed after that to be bowled out for 226. Although West Indies, with 48 overs at their disposal, then lost Haynes and Greenidge cheaply, the ease with which Richardson and Dujon added 92 in 23 overs looked ominous for Australia. However, Richardson hit a full toss back to Taylor and Dujon fell to Border. With ten overs left, and Richards bearing a charmed life, West Indies needed 82 to win; with three overs left, and Richards still there, they needed 27. But Waugh held a wonderful catch by the sightscreen to send back Harper, Richards was eventually caught at long-on, and Alderman's final over, with 14 needed from it, allowed no liberties.

Man of the Match: S. R. Waugh. Attendance: 66,092.
