Needing 2 off the last ball of the match to give Australia victory, McDermott hit it, a full toss from Ambrose, straight to Richards, standing on the edge of the circle at mid-wicket. It was a fluctuating game, played on a pitch which the batsmen found power to be of more use than timing. When Greenidge and Haynes put on 90 in twenty overs for West Indies' first wicket, after Richards had won the toss, Australia looked like being set an appreciably higher target than 221. But ten economical overs of left-arm slows by Border, bowling only to save Stephen Waugh from aggravating a groin injury, proved a significant factor. West Indies lost their last seven wickets for 38 runs in 9.1 overs. Australia's brave reply owed most to Boon (120 balls, six fours) and Stephen Waugh, until he was run out while batting, for the first time for Australia, with his twin. When the last over started Australia needed 6 to win, the playing conditions stating, somewhat unusually in one-day internationals, that if the scores finished level the result should be a tie, irrespective of which side had lost fewer wickets.
