At Hyderabad, March 20. India won by virtue of having lost fewer wickets with the scores tied. In a sensational and controversial finish Abdul Qadir ran himself out off the last ball, attempting an impossible and unnecessary second run. Had he settled for the single which levelled the scores, Pakistan would have won on the tie-breaker, having scored more runs than India after 25 overs. To add to the confusion, the umpires had failed to notice an infringement of the field-placing restriction. Only three, instead of four, Indian fieldsmen were in the 30-yard circle as Kapil Dev bowled the last bowl, and so it should have been a no-ball. Put in to bat, India had been struggling at 95 for four but were rescued by a stand of 112 between Shastri and Kapil- the best for India's fifth wicket in a one-day international.
