At Jaipur, October 26. England won by 34 runs. Toss: West Indies. A marvellously disciplined innings by Gooch (137 balls, seven fours) and some indisciplined bowling by West Indies, who gave away 22 runs - and extra balls - in wides, brought England the victory they needed to have a realistic chance of qualifying for the semi-finals. So profligate was West Indies' early bowling that, after 30 overs, England were 151 for two. A controlled spell by Richards, however, pegged them back to 35 from the next ten, and when Patterson returned to dismiss Lamb and Gooch, it took some inventive batting from Emburey (sixteen balls, four fours) and DeFreitas (nine balls) to realise 83 from the final fifth. While Richards (51 in 51 balls) was adding 82 in almost eighteen overs with Richardson, hitting Emburey once and Hemmings twice for six, the match was swinging West Indies' way. Then Hemmings bowled him, off stump, to reward England's decision to play both their spinners on a pitch sufficiently green to provide some movement off the seam for much of the day. Next, Hemmings caught Logie to end another promising partnership, and when, from backward point, he hit the stumps at the far end to run out Harper, his cup was overflowing. There were two good catches, well to his right, by Downton to dismiss Hooper and Richardson (130 balls, one six, eight fours) as, under pressure, West Indies cracked. They had begun the 41st over needing 65 with six wickets in hand; in eight overs they lost them for 30 runs.
