†SRI LANKA v WEST INDIES

At Kanpur, October 21. West Indies won by 25 runs. Toss: Sri Lanka. That West Indies would not run riot a second time against the Sri Lankans became apparent as Simmons, an accomplished strokeplayer, took 37 overs over his 89 (eleven fours) on a tardy pitch. Logie, with his ability to improvise, was the only other West Indian batsman to overcome the conditions. When Sri Lanka batted, however, Ranatunga outshone them both, hitting 86 from 92 balls to accelerate an innings that began with all the haste of a dowager. While a requirement of 9 an over was being met, Sri Lanka looked capable of avenging their massive defeat in Karachi; but with 37 needed from the last four overs, Patterson returned to bowl a mean spell which left an almost impossible 28 to be scored from the final over. Benjamin never looked like conceding that many.

Man of the Match: P. V. Simmons.
