The loss of Athey and Gatting within the space of three balls, after they had added 135 in 24 overs, arrested England's progress. The next three wickets produced only 19 runs as Imran brought himself back to take advantage of the breach. Athey (104 balls, two sixes, six fours) and Gatting (65 balls) were both out sweeping, Athey attempting the controversial reverse variety in the 37th over. On a true batting pitch 244 did not seem enough runs, and so it proved. Certainly, England could not afford the luxury of giving Ramiz two lives: an easy chance to Gatting at square leg when he was 6 and another to Athey at mid-on when he was 62. That they felt Ramiz had been stumped off Emburey later in his innings was of less significance. With Malik (92 balls, seven fours), Ramiz put on 167 in a partnership built on good placement and quick running. There were 62 singles, as well as five fours, in Ramiz's 113 from 148 balls. During the afternoon, play was suspended for a time after stones were thrown on to the outfield.
