†PAKISTAN v SRI LANKA

At Hyderabad, Pakistan, October 8. Pakistan won by 15 runs. Toss: Pakistan. Sri Lanka, with their exciting young opener, Mahanama, in the vanguard, made a courageous attempt at a target that required more than 5 runs an over. As he began to accelerate in a partnership of 79 with Gurusinha, it began to look as if Mahanama (one six, seven fours) might orchestrate an upset. With his dismissal, however, Sri Lanka again fell behind the run-rate. Pakistan's total was built on Javed Miandad's fifth one-day international hundred (96 balls, six fours). He passed 50 for the ninth consecutive match and reached 4,000 runs in his 120th one-day match for Pakistan. Ramiz, with whom he added 113, was the anchorman, taking 30 overs to reach 50. Imran took his 100th wicket in this cricket when he snuffed out Sri Lanka's challenge by bowling the belligerent De Silva, but the bowling honours went to Abdul Qadir, economical and at times unreadable.

Man of the Match: Javed Miandad.
