The Australians, looking for a total of 260 or more to improve their run-rate in the hope of avoiding a semi-final with Pakistan, had to thank an uncharacteristically loose final over by Chatfield for scoring as many as 251. The New Zealand seamer, usually so accurate, was hit for 19 runs, including two leg-side sixes by Marsh. It had taken Australia 45 overs to reach 200, with only Marsh, the third player after S. M. Gavaskar and G. M. Turner to bat throughout a World Cup innings, showing any application once Jones (80 balls) was caught in the 36th over. Marsh's 126, his fourth one-day hundred for Australia and second of this World Cup, contained three sixes and twelve fours. New Zealand suffered an unlucky setback when Martin Crowe, the non-striker, was run out by Waugh's deflection of a straight drive from Wright. Rutherford batted neatly, Wright solidly, but Border never let the Australians relax their grip. He also bowled seven tidy overs of left-arm slows and took two wickets to expose New Zealand's limited lower-order batting.
