Srikkanth actually appeared oblivious of the danger when Rutherford dismissed him. Sidhu (71 balls, four sixes, four fours) got the innings going from a position of 21 for three in the tenth over, but when he was fifth out, at 114, something special was required if India were to set any sort of target. Kapil Dev (58 balls, one six, four fours) and More provided it, adding 82 runs in dashing fashion off the last 51 balls. New Zealand, without Wright, who was ill with a virus, batted soundly but never quickly enough. Martin Crowe, the one batsman capable of developing the run-rate, was classically beaten by the slow left-armer, Maninder Singh, one of three spin bowlers employed in India.
