Marsh, scoring the first century of the competition off 145 balls, and Boon put on 152 in 31 overs and three balls, and then Border set about the weary attack. Once the volatile Srikkanth was out for 20, India were never in the hunt. Gavaskar remained unbeaten with 92, his highest one-day score for India, but he did his team no service in that, by going so slowly, he reduced their scoring-rate for the competition, a factor which would have been vital had two countries finished level on points and wins.
