At Melbourne, March 10 (day/night). India won by eight wickets. Showing the same qualities as in their previous matches - astute captaincy, steady bowling, with spin complementing medium pace, keen fielding and sensible batting - India became popular and confident winners of the tournament. Pakistan were never really in the game once Kapil Dev and Chetan Sharma (Binny was unfit to play because of a virus) had reduced them to 33 for four in the twelfth over, although Imran and Miandad did stage something of a recovery. In the end only a last-wicket partnership of 31 left India with as many as 177 to make. For India's first wicket Shastri and Srikkanth made 103, the watchful Shastri making an ideal foil to the dashing Srikkanth. Azharuddin contributed an attractive 25 off 26 balls and India went on to win with a comfortable 2.5 overs to spare. As they drove round the ground on a lap of honour aboard a car won by Shastri, for being chosen as champion of champions, they were given a generous reception by a sizeable crowd. India's prize for winning was £22,500, Pakistan's £11,500 for finishing as runners-up.
